SEWING BASICS #1: HEAT PAD

  • Madjax Maker Force 515 East Main Street Muncie, IN, 47305 United States (map)

New to sewing or looking to build confidence at the machine? This beginner-friendly workshop is the perfect place to start. In Sewing Basics #1, you’ll learn how to safely and confidently use a Brother sewing machine while creating a simple, useful project—a reusable heat pad.

Participants will be guided step by step through the fundamentals of machine sewing, including threading the machine, winding a bobbin, adjusting stitch settings, sewing straight seams, and basic troubleshooting. You’ll practice essential techniques while constructing a rice bag that can be used as a microwaveable heat pack or cold pack at home.

No prior sewing experience is required. This class is designed to help you feel comfortable using the sewing machine, understand basic sewing terminology, and leave with a finished project you can be proud of.

All materials and equipment are provided. This workshop is a great first step for anyone interested in exploring sewing, apparel, or textile projects at MadJax.

By the end of this class, you’ll understand how the Brother machines function and feel more confident returning to the Design Lab to sew on your own.

This program is FREE to current Maker Space Members (use coupon: MEMBER) or $25 for guests. Space is limited.

Meet your instructor: KELLIE TEAL

Kellie Teal has been sewing since she was eight years old, when her grandmother gave her a battery-operated sewing machine and access to a treasured scrap box. She began by making (very primitive!) Barbie clothes for herself and her sister, but even then, their dolls had custom style.

Over the years, Kellie has sewn just about everything imaginable, from golf bags and evening wear to lingerie and everyday alterations. Her specialty and favorite work is gown alterations, particularly bridal and prom dresses. She loves the moment a client looks in the mirror and sees a dress that fits perfectly. That smile is the best part.

Kellie has likely altered enough bridal and prom gowns to fill a dump truck and takes pride in helping people feel confident and beautiful for life’s biggest moments.

A MadJax member, Kellie is passionate about sharing her talents and helping keep sewing alive as both a practical skill and creative art form. She especially enjoys transforming something old into something new, whether that means tailoring a garment for a flawless fit or completely reimagining it into something entirely different.
