MEMBERS ONLY
Join fellow makers for a hands-on introduction to the lathe and woodturning through spindle turning - using the lathe “between centers” to shape wood into functional and decorative forms. Attending this course will grant you access and creative freedom to freely implement our Shipyard lathe into your creative projects.
Led by experienced woodturner and Maker Space Manager Jason Robinson, this hands on workshop will introduce you to the art of turning wood on a lathe. Here you will gain an understanding of everything from safety protocols, wood preparation, mounting techniques, and proper use of turning tools. Participants will gain the foundational skills needed to create a variety of spindle-turned items such as:
Baseball bats
Spinning tops
Candlesticks
Furniture legs
Tool handles
Pens
Ornaments
This class meets two times on Saturday, February 7 and Saturday, February 14 from Noon-3 p.m. Participants are expected to attend both sessions, as each week builds on the last.
Space is limited, and registration is required. Open to Madjax Maker Space members only.
Meet your instructor: JASON ROBINSON
After studying Fine Art and Graphic Design in college, Jason Robinson stepped into a leadership role that allowed him to grow as a digital artist, leader, process improvement manager, and teacher, trainer, and mentor. While he always maintained a strong interest in the arts, his creative pursuits often took a backseat to his professional career. In 2020, like many others, he found time to explore new creative processes, which led him to discover woodturning—a craft that has captivated him ever since. Following an early retirement in 2025, Jason began turning full time and actively engaging with Muncie’s vibrant Maker community. Jason’s role as an active member in the Maker Space at MadJax led to his staff position as the Maker Space Manager in August 2025.
