September First Thursday - NEA Big Read Kick Off with Muncie Public Library
The NEA Big Read Kickoff comes to the first-floor Public Hall at MadJax during September’s First Thursday, hosted by Muncie Public Library. This free community event features free copies of the year’s two Big Read books, Filipino food tastings by Baryo, readings, family crafts, and interactive booths from local artists, vendors, and community partners.
Muncie Public Library is one of only 65 organizations nationwide to receive this prestigious grant, which will bring a year of free community programs celebrating reading, creativity, and connection.
This year’s Big Read features two powerful books:
Bite by Bite: Nourishments and Jamborees by Aimee Nezhukumatathil (for adults)
Fry Bread: A Native American Family Story by Kevin Noble Maillard (for youth)
Both explore the connections between food, family, culture, and gratitude—perfect themes for reflection and conversation.
Vendor Booth Sign-Up
Local makers, artists, and creative small businesses are invited to apply for a free vendor booth during the kickoff. This is a great opportunity to showcase and sell your work to a wide audience at one of downtown Muncie’s most well-attended monthly events. Vendors are encouraged, but not required, to bring work inspired by the event’s themes: family, meals, memories, and traditions. Sign up by Friday, August 29.
Kickoff Highlights:
Free copies of both books (while supplies last)
Filipino food tastings by Baryo
Readings from the featured books
Family crafts and activities
Booths from local vendors, artists, and community partners
The Big Read Kickoff is part of First Thursday in downtown Muncie, so you can enjoy art, food, and culture all evening long.
