Design Lab Technician Job Description and Information
Job Description:
The Design Lab Tech will assist with Design Lab operations as well as provide support for maker-led workshops and programs. They will assist lab members, makers, and workshop attendees by providing instructional and one-on-one project support, as well as equipment training and technical support for the fabrication equipment and software in the Design Lab. They will assist the Design Lab Manager with general operations, equipment maintenance, in-house projects, group training sessions, and promoting the lab to prospective members.
Primary Duties:
Provide technical support and instruction on Design Lab equipment and software to members
Learn and maintain familiarity with each piece of equipment and associated software in the lab
Assist the Lab Manager with general operations, training sessions, equipment maintenance, internal projects, consumables inventory, and promoting the lab to prospective members
Assist resident makers and staff with the planning, promotion, and implementation of community-based maker workshops and initiatives
Assist workshop instructors by helping participants during workshop events
Familiarize members with lab policies and enforce them as necessary
Conduct tours of the lab for guests and prospective members
Maintain a clean and organized lab environment
Assist in the development of equipment training materials
Embody our strategic vision and promote the implementation of our mission: empowering makers to explore their passions, exercise their skills, and share them with the community
Supporting Duties:
Assist in the development and/or distribution of promotional materials
Assist the Director of Initiatives and Partnerships with outreach activities and events
Qualifications:
Eighteen (18) years of age or older
High school diploma with some college experience or technical training
Working knowledge and experience with any technology-based fabrication equipment and associated design software is preferred (including but not limited to 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC mills, sublimation printers, 3D modeling and graphic design programs, etc.)
Working knowledge and experience with woodworking and/or other shop equipment is preferred
Willingness and capacity to learn how to use unfamiliar equipment and/or software
Effective communication skills, both orally and in writing
Problem-solving attitude, along with strong interpersonal and collaborative skills
Customer service skills: confidence with public interaction and instructional assistance
Team player: willing to collaborate with others to realize successful projects and generate interest within the surrounding community
