From Maker to Market
Across downtown Muncie, a Creative Corridor is taking shape, linking arts and culture destinations from Ball State University to Minnetrista into one connected creative district. MadJax is proud to be part of that momentum, and our newest initiative, the Maker to Market Accelerator, is one way we're helping product-based entrepreneurs turn that creative energy into thriving businesses.
As the Creative Corridor continues to take shape across Muncie, conversations about creativity are expanding beyond traditional definitions of art.
Who Are Muncie's Makers?
The vision embraces not only painters, performers, and musicians, but also the people who create products with their hands, solve problems through design, and turn ideas into businesses.
These makers are artists in their own right.
They are woodworkers and ceramicists. Textile artists and jewelers. Food entrepreneurs, leatherworkers, printmakers, product designers, and small manufacturers. They create objects that tell stories, solve everyday problems, and contribute to the unique identity of our community.
They also contribute to our local economy.
Listening to What Makers Need
Over the past year and a half, the team at MadJax has been listening carefully to the needs of these creative entrepreneurs. What we heard was consistent: while Muncie offers valuable resources for starting and growing businesses, many product-based entrepreneurs were struggling with challenges unique to making physical goods.
They knew how to create. What they needed was help bringing those creations to market.
How do you improve production without sacrificing quality? How should a product be priced? What kind of packaging attracts customers? How do you scale from selling occasionally on social media or at a local craft fair to building a sustainable business?
Introducing the Maker to Market Accelerator
Those questions inspired the Maker to Market Accelerator, a new six-month cohort program for makers, artists, and small manufacturers who already have a product and are ready to grow their business. Thanks to generous support from the Indiana Economic Development Corporation's Community Collaboration Fund, the inaugural cohort is offered at no cost to selected participants.
The program is designed for entrepreneurs who already have a product in the marketplace, whether that's furniture, jewelry, ceramics, textiles, food, artwork, or manufactured goods, and are ready to sharpen their pricing, production, branding, and sales.
What Participants Will Experience
Participants get more than classroom instruction. Over six monthly cohort sessions, they'll have access to MadJax's Maker Space and fabrication equipment, individualized coaching from business experts, and peer learning alongside other product-based entrepreneurs.
Through partnerships with the Indiana Small Business Development Center, Ball State University's Entrepreneurial Leadership Institute, Muncie Makers Market, and The People's Marketplace, participants will apply what they're learning in real market settings, then return to refine their pricing, branding, and business strategies.
It's an approach built around learning by doing, which is what these creative entrepreneurs already do best.
Reaching Beyond City Limits
Talent exists everywhere, not just within Muncie's city limits. By partnering with the City of Hartford City in Blackford County and offering both in person and virtual participation, the accelerator reaches makers throughout the region.
That same spirit of collaboration runs through the Creative Corridor as a whole. Rather than asking organizations to compete for attention or resources, the Corridor's partners share and build on one another's strengths, a reminder that creativity and economic development go hand in hand.
Investing in the Makers Who Build Our Community
Communities flourish when creativity is supported at every stage, not only when artwork hangs on a wall or a business cuts a ribbon, but through the messy, uncertain process of turning an idea into something people can hold in their hands.
Behind every handcrafted candle, ceramic mug, specialty food product, piece of furniture, or invention is someone willing to take a creative risk. Sometimes all they need is access to the right tools, the right mentors, and a community willing to believe in their potential.
The strongest creative communities don't just celebrate makers. They invest in them. When creative people build sustainable businesses, they don't just make products, they help make a stronger community.
