2022 EVENTS AND COLLABORATIONS AT MADJAX

Updated: May 1, 2023

Throughout 2022 we saw an increase in events and collaborations that helped to bring a greater sense of community and connection in the Madjax Building.

MAKER IN RESIDENCE

The 2022 Madjax Makers in Residence provided instruction in art, pottery and woodworking; and also worked together to create a more creative, collaborative environment.

Special thanks to our 2022 Makers:

Aimee Maychack – FarmBot Mural & Ethical Taxidermist

Debra Dragoo – Arts Instruction & First Thursday coordinator

Tom Steiner – Woodworking Instruction & Madjax Woodworkers Guild

Tammeron Jones-Francis and Anna Popova-Francis of Claywood Pottery – Pottery & Art Instruction

SUPER TWOS DAY

We celebrated 2/22/22 with fun family-friendly STEAM activities including paper circuits, cardboard engineering, robot painting, facemask decorating, and a Design Lab open house.

RAIN BARREL MAKING WORKSHOP

In partnership with the Muncie Sanitary District, our local Stormwater and Recycling Educator helped participants learn about ways to protect the cleanliness of our local watershed, shared insights on the structural improvements happening locally, and led participants in creating Barrel to capture rainwater runoff.

ADAPTIVE TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOP

In partnership with the Ball State University Adaptive Technology Lab, we invited students to explore ways that technology is being used to create accessibility options for individuals with disabilities and how these advances can support learners and workers of all abilities. Alongside some incredible volunteers who shared about their real world experiences, students explored technologies that convert text to braille, create maps and images using 3D printing, use raised line technology to depict images and words, convert websites to audio, adapt board games for visual impairments and more!

MAKER MONDAYS

This weekly series launched in 2021 and continued in 2022 featuring low- cost exploratory hands-on workshops led by the Makers and tenants in the Madjax community. The Spring session featured Book Binding with Book Arts Collaborative, Collages with Debra Gindhart, Coffee with Tom Steiner, and Aerial Silks with the Aerial Annex.

STAR WARS DAY

Viking Realty and Hoola Managed IT partnered to host a day of creative photography and fun!

EDUCATOR MAKER IN RESIDENCE

This year Madjax welcomed a new cohort of Makers in Residence by expanding support and paid professional development for K-12 classroom teachers. In partnership with Purdue Polytechnic Anderson we hosted five educators who created teams that included a workforce partner and a student apprentice to lead Summer Camps and seasonal workshops. Enrollment is now open for the 2023 cohort at madjax.org/fellowships.

BATMAN VISITS MADJAX

Batman from Heroes 4 Higher visited Muncie. Brad from Hoola Managed IT is a longtime friend of Batman and invited him to visit us at Madjax for a tour and photos. Thanks to Lucius Conner from Viking Realty and Hannah Kayy Photography for documenting his visit!

PUMPKIN CARVING & PAINTING

During the October Arts Walk we partnered with the East Central Neighborhood Association for pumpkin carving, painting and family games.

iMADE IMMERSIVE LEARNING PARTNERSHIP

This unique learning opportunity brings Ball State University College of Architecture and Planning students into the community to design and build at “Studio Madjax”. This year Professor Kevin Klinger and his students partnered with the Indiana Hardwood Association. Students also hosted a fundraiser to support programming at Madjax by creating hardwood coasters and collaborating with Guardian Brewery to accept donations with the benefit of a free beer.

FIRST THURSDAY FEATURING LOCAL ARTISTS & MAKERS

Each month during 2022 we hosted local makers and artists for art displays, vendors and family fun. Family fun including STEM kit giveaways, indoor ice skating, wooden catapults, and pop up workshops in the Design Lab.
